I have recorded a video for World IP Day.
“Hello, I’m Dominic McGonigal – composer and Company Secretary of IMARA - a global organisation championing the rights of music performers.
What intellectual property means to me? In essence – valuing human creativity.
I’ve spent much of my professional life working to improve the position of music creators and performers and standing up for the value of music in public policy:
I led the campaign for 20 extra years of copyright for musicians and producers.
I led the campaign to get composing into the UK curriculum.
I led the campaign for a streaming remuneration right in the EU
But the work is far from done. In streaming, in AI, and across the digital economy, performers still too often lack the recognition, protection and remuneration they deserve.
That is why IMARA was created: to champion and protect music performers’ rights globally.
On World IP Day, my message is this:
Musicians, be part of the IP conversation. Add your voice. Help the policymakers listen to musicians."
