Happy St Valentine’s Day! Remembering the love duet in Mathilde, with the ravishing intertwining lines of the soprano and violin. Mathilde (Schoenberg) and Richard (Gerstl) have fallen in love, two broken souls who have found each other. The title role, Mathilde, is a soprano who duets with the violin as Richard. Spoiler alert: it ends in tragedy when Arnold (Schoenberg)’s friends catch up with them and Richard kills himself. The final lament is worth a listen, but not on Valentine’s Day!
