Euan Tait hears things in my music which I am not aware of, as they come from the creative sub-conscious. He has shaped the 2nd movement of my Sea Symphony, urging me to take it further in its primeval energy and richness of colour. The title, Splash, captures the energy, the rhythmic vitality, the regular irregularity, the random inevitability. I have been working on the chords. They were there in my head from the start, but out of focus, half-formed, not present. They have taken shape over the last six weeks, in my composer notebook, but mostly just going round in my head – apologies to my Sarah for being a bit distracted of late! Now they are fully formed, punctuating the movement with a force that is quietly powerful and loudly exuberant.
Splash is my Rite Of Spring, with echos of Beethoven, Messiaen, Sibelius, Ravel, Lully, Marin Marais.
There’s still some tidying up to do with the orchestration. And take on board valuable insights from dear friends who kindly listen to my work in progress. And it will have percussion to add even more colour!
Here’s a sneak preview of the MP3 playback.
