Today, I walked 3km for the Race Against Dementia. Even carrying a heavy tuba on my back and getting soaked in the rain, that is as nothing compared to the challenge of finding treatment for dementia or even accurate, early diagnosis. I was on my way to a session with London Repertoire Orchestra to play Elgar’s In The South, hence the tuba on my back. Elgar’s bright, uplifting orchestral score, written while on holiday in the sun in Italy, was the perfect antidote. Music seems to transcend neuron failures in the brain. I seem to have heightened sensibility in composing, performing and listening.
