I am very proud of my achievements for musicians and other creatives – an extra 20 years of copyright, streaming rights and getting composing into the curriculum. I only learned tonight that I achieved something for social justice.
Chatting to a new friend at birthday drinks, I heard that major social justice contracts – to stop re-offending – are being won by third sector organisations. 20 years ago, these contracts all went to commercial companies, which is why I was recruited to the Board of Nacro. We managed to turn Nacro into a formidable service organisation, providing housing, education, alcohol and drug rehabilitation, mentoring and the all-important helpline. We then started winning national contracts so we were able to change the lives of thousands using our services every year. I was always promoting this life-changing value that an effective third sector organisation could provide. I didn’t think I had succeeded at the time – Nacro was the only third sector organisation winning national contracts. But, now, it seems that message has changed the commissioning landscape, for the better.
