I didn’t expect that! In Krakow for the General Assembly of IMARA, to improve the rights of musicians, and I hear the most incredible version of Lift Every Voice And Sing. After a day discussing music rights, I explored the music scene in Kazimierz and Krakow Old Town. Walking through the Market Square, there was a pop-up mini stadium, with an Army band entertaining about 2,000 people! The audience was dancing and cheering.
After exploring several wonderfully atmospheric bars, I ended up in the iconic Harris Piano Jazz Bar. On stage were the Zaprah Organ Trio, three incredible musicians who had got together for a tour of Czech Republic and Poland. I was so lucky to catch them as their version of Lift Every Voice And Sing was incredible – jazz / funk / fusion / gospel. It was lyrical, poignant, powerful and uplifting.
The musicians – Wojtek Justyna (guitar), Daniel Bulatkin (Hammond organ) and Kasparas Petkus (drums) — were delighted to hear that I had led the campaign to get the extra 20 years of copyright!
