Mort Subite (Sudden Death) is perhaps not the most appropriate name for a bar where I am working on a piece about home from home. But it’s a beautiful space, with an old world charm and a quiet understated welcome.
In fact, I have just escaped a bar where the multiple noises were bombarding my poor brain and causing overload. Mort Subite is, by contrast, a haven of peace in the heart of busy Brussels.
There is also no background music, just the hubbub of genial conversation – perfect for Cumhluadar, the piece about home from home. Cumhluadar is Irish for the hearth and the good company it keeps. The piece is about the homes created by the Irish emigrating and the welcome of the immigrants who have made Ireland their home. It will be scored for celtic harp and orchestra.
In a quiet hour on my own, I have filled four pages in my notebook with melodies and harmonies and I have another 40 spinning round in my head. The right place is a great inspiration.
