A rush of inspiration led to an early start to finish off my latest composition. I woke early, despite having had a late night after working on it until past midnight. It’s the shortest night’s sleep I’ve had for ages! The creative fire generates its own energy and it doesn’t overload my poor thinking brain.
Loving Pairs is a love song, with the players pairing up to express different forms of love – agape, eros, philia, storge. Each pair of instruments creates its own sound with a lyrical melody that dances between the instruments. The romantic melody appears in different modes, giving love its rainbow of colour. Between each iteration of the melody, the instruments converse in pairs in anticipation of the next love type. Although scored for just seven instruments, there is a seemingly endless palette of textures. The warm harmonies produce a luscious sound allowing love to blossom in all its forms. It’s 8’ long, so plenty of space for that gorgeous melody to sing. It’s scored for flute, clarinet, vibraphone, piano, violin, viola, cello.
Here’s the MP3 playback.
