Blown away by the 23 wind players at Higham Hall! We just premièred Sunrise Over Skiddaw and the audience loved it!
It’s a colourful piece, using the 23 instruments in different combinations so the colour of the sound is constantly changing. First all the bassoons have a quiet, rich harmony, with oboes floating over the top. Then that chord morphs into clarinets, with flutes over the top. Finally, all 23 instruments are busy, creating a mountain-like texture, with the big tune soaring over the top.
The full line-up is 4 flutes, 4 oboes, 1 cor anglais, 4 clarinets, 1 bass clarinet, 4 horns, 5 bassoons.
